MBT Basic

This interactive course forms the first component of learning to apply mentalizing principles to clinical work. The course covers theory and evidence for mentalizing and is peppered with both clinical and social examples which highlight how mentalizing difficulties disrupt relationships, including the therapeutic relationship. The course covers:

Assessment of mentalizing,
Developing a mentalizing formulation,
Relating mentalizing problems to the clinical presentation
Interventions aimed at stimulating mentalizing
How to respond to the non-mentalizing modes to recover mentalizing

The course is very interactive with use of video material, discussion and role play to maximise opportunities for learning. MBT Basic training is also available to be run internally for teams wishing to incorporate MBT into their work.

This workshop is suitable for mental health and other professionals who are interested in the treatment of personality disorder.

Applicants for the basic entry training course must meet the following pre-entry criteria:

They should be qualified health professionals such as Mental Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Clinical/Counselling Psychologists, Psychiatrists and Social Workers, Psychotherapists.

They will have a minimum of 1 years’ experience working therapeutically with people with personality disorder in teams or in individual or group work.

They will have undertaken supervised practice and be committed to professional standards and practice within an ethical framework.
It is desirable that they have personal experience of psychotherapy or counselling.

Mentalizing refers to our ability to attend to mental states in ourselves and in others as we attempt to understand our own actions and those of others on the basis of intentional mental states. A focus on this very human activity as a therapeutic intervention forms the core of mentalization based treatment(MBT). MBT was initially developed for the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD) although it is now being used on a wide range of disorders. Training programmes are now available for MBT for antisocial personality disorder, MBT for families, and MBT for adolescents.

Mentalization Based Treatment is an evidence based psychological therapy for borderline personality disorder (BPD). The training is organised in a stepped system from basic training to practitioner level and then through to supervisor to training levels.

There are currently three components to training in Mentalization Based Treatment (MBT):

Supervision
Certificate course for practitioner level

The MBT Basic has been adapted to an online format including prerecorded videos, three days of live webinars including role plays and interactive learning. This format is being made available to Australian clinicians in AEST for the first time in August 2021.

Mentalization Based Treatment (MBT) is gaining traction internationally as an innovative and useful way to treat the relational pathology at the core of complex psychopathology. Participants of this three day training course should be qualified health professionals who have undertaken a minimum of 1 year experience working with clients in the context of supervised practice. Participants will learn the necessary skills to implement MBT techniques into their clinical practice as a specialised treatment. Emphasis will be placed on equipping participants to maintain the therapist stance used in MBT, which differs from that used in many other treatment modalities. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss and role play a range of difficult but common clinical situations. Attendance of an accredited Basic Training Course in MBT is the first step required toward becoming an accredited MBT practitioner.

Mentalization Based Treatment is an evidence based psychological therapy for borderline personality disorder (BPD). The training is organised in a stepped system from basic training to practitioner level and then through to supervisor to training levels.
